Platonic Love

I wrote Platonic Love because me and my best friend have always had a really close bond. We spend time together, we talk about everything, we support each other, and we’re comfortable around each other in a way that people notice.

When people see us together, I understand how it can look like we’re a couple. But we’re not. There has never been anything romantic between us.

The problem is that some of the men she dates have had a hard time believing that. They see how close we are and start assuming there has to be something else going on. That jealousy has caused tension before, but me and my best friend don’t let anybody come between our friendship.

That is really where the song came from. It’s about people looking at a bond from the outside and deciding what they think it has to be, instead of accepting what it actually is.

Platonic Love is about a friendship that is deep enough to be mistaken for romance.

You can love somebody, trust them, be emotionally close to them, have chemistry, laugh together, build together, and still not be in a romantic relationship. Some friendships are just that strong.

The song also deals with jealousy and assumptions. People can look at two close friends and create a whole story because the relationship doesn’t fit into the box they’re used to.

But the people inside the friendship know the truth.

We might look like a couple sometimes. We just aren’t one. And our friendship stays solid anyway.

I wanted Platonic Love to feel soulful and emotional, but it still had to hit like a club record.

The song sits around 134 BPM with a steady House/EDM groove, deep bass, jazz piano, Latin percussion, brass, strings, sax accents, and my four-thud signature at the beginning and end.

I didn’t want the production constantly changing directions. I wanted one groove that stays locked in while the vocals and instruments move around it.

Most of the vocals are sung with soul and emotion, but there is one talk-rap-singing section where I wanted the words to land a little harder.

The whole record is built to feel tight, emotional, and replayable — something you can dance to, but still hear the story in it.
